Portable Appliance Tester (PAT) | Appliance Testing | Testers Portable Appliance Testers (PAT) N.A.P.I.T. The quality of our service is very important to Bremins, therefore to reflect this commitment to quality we are full members of the National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers.
NAPIT was formed in 1992 as a consequence of the lack of understanding in the inspection and PAT testing field. and more specifically to plug a loop hole that allows electricians to inspect electrical appliances, even though they may not have had up to date appropriate training, do not possess the relevant qualifications and have probably not acquired the specific experience.
Benefits of using a N.A.P.I.T registered company Qualifications and Quality Insurance To become a member of NAPIT all engineers have to have passed a technical assessment by the organisation, The assessment is laid down by the professional body and is backed by Zurich insurance, The pass mark for the assessment is 100% compared to the City & Guilds 40%. All approved inspectors are subject to a written and practical re-assessment every 3 years, irrespective of any qualifications held. In order to maintain the associations high standards, members are subject to random visits Two references from recent customers are also required.
Insurance All members have to possess a current liability certificate, with a minimum cover of £2,000,000.
Calibration Certificates Test instruments have to comply to BS EN 61010 and carry current calibration certificates.
Specification All testing is to be carried out in accordance with the IEE code of practice Information recorded must consist of serial numbers where possible to ensure the customer complies to the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. (The recording of serial numbers is necessary to ensure correct maintenance records of the appliance, if only asset numbers are recorded these can be removed or changed over a period of time causing difficulty in record keeping)
Site Records Each site shall be provided with a manual, for the purpose of identification, for compliance with Electricity at work regulations 1989. All test results shall be contained within this manual. A signed certificate and remedial report shall be submitted with every set of test results.
Office Records Simultaneously with the submission of the site records, a signed certificate and remedial report shall be filed with these offices.
Storage All test results shall be archived by the testing company for the life of the appliance. Storage of these test results should be such that they will be safe from fire and theft. Method of archiving shall be stated. Records should be such that the life history of any one appliance can be forwarded on request.
It is worth mentioning that NAPIT is the only trade association dedicated to electrical inspection and testing, that monitors and controls the activities of its members. Although Bremins regularly get asked for NICEIC registration details amongst others, it is important to note that these organisations are for electrical contractors and works that conform to BS7671 for electrical installations. The NICEIC do not recognise portable appliance testing within their scope for membership to the trade association. Therefore membership cannot insure contractors ability, training, or competency to carry out inspection and testing.
